Phenylalanine is the one product on this list with a real consumer-safety labelling dimension: it is the amino acid people with phenylketonuria must restrict, which is why aspartame-containing foods carry a phenylalanine warning. Any finished product built on free L-phenylalanine should have its warning statement decided by a regulatory reviewer, not copied from a competitor.

Water solubility of 26.9 g/L at 25 °C is modest — comparable to leucine — but the temperature dependence is the steepest on this list: 19.8 g/L at 0 °C to 99.0 g/L at 100 °C, a five-fold swing. Hot-mix headroom is large and cold-storage precipitation risk is correspondingly real.

It sublimes in vacuo. That matters for anyone freeze-drying or vacuum-drying a phenylalanine-containing solution — you can lose active to the condenser rather than to degradation, and mass balance will not close.

The aromatic ring gives it UV absorbance, which is convenient analytically (it is why phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan are the amino acids you can see on a plain UV detector) and inconvenient if you are running a UV assay on a multi-ingredient blend where it will interfere.

A 1% solution is pH 5.4-6.0 and the taste is described as slightly bitter — mild enough that phenylalanine is not usually the flavour problem in an EAA blend, unlike isoleucine or leucine.

01Do I need a phenylketonuria warning on my product?
Very possibly, and this is not a question to answer from a supplier's web page. Phenylalanine is the amino acid PKU patients must restrict, which is why aspartame products carry a warning. Get the requirement for each destination market confirmed by your regulatory reviewer before you print cartons.
02How much can I dissolve, and does temperature help?
26.9 g/L in water at 25 °C, but the temperature curve is the steepest of any amino acid we stock — 19.8 g/L at 0 °C up to 99.0 g/L at 100 °C. Hot mixing gives you a lot of headroom, and a cold warehouse takes it straight back. Design to your minimum storage temperature.
03We freeze-dry our premix. Anything to watch?
Yes — phenylalanine sublimes in vacuo. If your mass balance does not close after lyophilisation, check the condenser before you suspect degradation.
04Is this the same grade used for aspartame production?
Not necessarily, and it is worth asking. Aspartame-intermediate phenylalanine is a huge market with its own specifications. Tell us your monograph and application in the RFQ and we will confirm which plant and grade the offer is against.
05What is the MOQ for L-Phenylalanine?
MOQ is quote-based and flexible. Tell us your target quantity in the RFQ — for core in-stock SKUs we can usually accommodate both trial orders and multi-tonne volumes.
