A dash means we have no fixed limit to publish for that parameter: it is reported on the batch COA and the limit is agreed with your QA. We would rather leave it blank than invent a number. 04Formulation & handling notes

Formulation & handling notes

The practical points our technical team raises with buyers of this material — the things that decide whether a batch behaves in your process.

01

Glutamine's solubility is the most temperature-sensitive of any amino acid on this list, and the numbers are worth memorising: 1 g needs 56.7 mL of water at 0 °C, 38.5 mL at 18 °C but only 20.8 mL at 30 °C. A concentrate that dissolves cleanly in a warm mixing tank can throw crystals when the pallet sits in a cold warehouse. Design your dissolution target at the coldest temperature the product will see, not at ambient.

02

It is practically insoluble in the usual organic solvents — 3.5 mg/100 mL in methanol, 0.46 mg/100 mL in ethanol — which rules out alcohol-based tincture and non-aqueous liquid formats entirely.

03

It melts with decomposition at about 185 °C, the lowest decomposition temperature of any amino acid on this list (compare leucine at 293 °C, tyrosine at 343 °C). Anything involving a hot die, a bar extruder or a spray-dry inlet needs to be checked against that ceiling rather than against a generic amino-acid assumption.

04

The amide side chain is the reactive part. An ammonium limit on the specification is more informative about how a batch has been stored and shipped than the assay is, because ammonia is what the amide releases when the material has been held wet or warm. Ask for it explicitly.

05

A 1.46% solution sits at pH 5-6, close enough to neutral that glutamine will not fight an existing beverage buffer — a real advantage over arginine base (alkaline) or citrulline malate (acidic) in a multi-ingredient pre-workout.

06

This is Zhicheng Bio's deepest single position at over 23 tonnes, which matters practically: glutamine is usually the highest-inclusion amino acid in a recovery formula, so it is the one where container-scale availability decides whether a launch is feasible.

05Applications

06Regulatory status by market

Regulatory status by market

Status of the raw material, stated as conservatively as our sources allow. This is supply-chain information, not regulatory advice — confirm the position for your finished product and destination market with your own regulatory counsel.

MarketStatusBasis
United StatesListed by name in FDA's food-additive regulation for amino acids as 'L-Glutamine'. That regulation permits use as a nutrient 'to significantly improve the biological quality of the total protein' of a food, subject to a cap of 12.4 (as L-glutamic acid, including L-glutamine) percent by weight of the total protein of the finished food, and to the labelling requirements in paragraph (e). It is not a general-purpose clearance for any food use, and it is not the authority under which dietary supplements are marketed — those sit under DSHEA and 21 CFR part 111.21 CFR 172.320(a), (b), (c)(4), (e)
United States (GRAS)A search of FDA's GRAS Notice Inventory for 'glutamine' returned only an unrelated enzyme-preparation notice (GRN 1289, a protein-glutamine glutaminase). There is no GRAS notice for L-glutamine itself.FDA GRAS Notice Inventory
European UnionAmino acids are not covered by the harmonised positive lists of Directive 2002/46/EC (Annexes I and II of that Directive cover vitamins and minerals only). Amino acid ingredients are therefore governed by general EU food law plus national rules, with mutual recognition under Article 4 of Regulation (EC) No 764/2008 in practice.Directive 2002/46/EC (food supplements); national member-state rules
JapanNo JP XVIII Official Monograph for L-glutamine was located. L-Glutamine appears in JP XVIII only in the Reagents/Test Solutions section, referenced to JIS K 9103 (L(+)-glutamine, Special class) — a reagent standard, not a pharmacopoeial monograph.JP XVIII, Reagents, Test Solutions and Standard Solutions

09Procurement FAQ

Procurement FAQ

01My glutamine concentrate crystallised in the warehouse. Why?
Almost certainly temperature. Glutamine needs 20.8 mL of water per gram at 30 °C but 38.5 mL at 18 °C and 56.7 mL at 0 °C. A solution made at tank temperature can be supersaturated at warehouse temperature. Set your maximum concentration from the coldest point in the distribution chain.
02Is 'FCC' on your offer sheet a real monograph grade?
It is the grade designation the manufacturer uses, and we will send you the specification sheet it refers to. One honest caveat worth knowing: FDA's amino-acid regulation, 21 CFR 172.320, cites Food Chemicals Codex pages for most amino acids but lists L-glutamine under a different reference standard. If your QA needs a named FCC edition and monograph, ask and we will get it confirmed in writing before you order.
03Can I put glutamine in an alcohol-based liquid?
No. It is practically insoluble in ethanol (0.46 mg/100 mL) and methanol (3.5 mg/100 mL). Glutamine is an aqueous-format and dry-blend ingredient only.
04What should be on the COA besides assay?
Ask for ammonium, loss on drying, and heavy metals as a minimum. Ammonium is the row that tells you whether the batch has been held wet or warm, which for glutamine is the failure mode that actually occurs in transit.
05What is the MOQ for L-Glutamine?
MOQ is quote-based and flexible. Tell us your target quantity in the RFQ — for core in-stock SKUs we can usually accommodate both trial orders and multi-tonne volumes.
06Can I get a sample of L-Glutamine before ordering?
Yes — samples are available on request for evaluation and lab verification. Mention it in your RFQ and we will confirm the arrangement.
