A dash means we have no fixed limit to publish for that parameter: it is reported on the batch COA and the limit is agreed with your QA. We would rather leave it blank than invent a number. Full physical, chemical, heavy-metal and microbiological parameters are listed in the Specification Sheet — sent with every quotation.

04Formulation & handling notes

Formulation & handling notes

The practical points our technical team raises with buyers of this material — the things that decide whether a batch behaves in your process.

01

The whole reason to buy the hydrochloride instead of the base is pH. Arginine free base gives a strongly alkaline solution (its guanidino group has a pK around 13); the hydrochloride is the near-neutral form that will not fight an existing beverage buffer. If your formula is a flavoured drink, the HCl salt is almost always the right choice.

02

The second reason is CO2. The free base absorbs carbon dioxide from air, which slowly forms carbonate and drifts pH and titratable assay; the hydrochloride does not behave that way, which makes it far more forgiving in a plant with open handling.

03

The cost of both benefits is potency: 82.7% arginine (174.20/210.66) against 100% for the base. A 3000 mg arginine claim needs 3628 mg of the hydrochloride. This is the single most common label error when a formula is switched between arginine forms.

04

The chloride is not free of consequences. It shows up in the chloride limit test of an amino-acid monograph, in your product's total sodium-chloride-equivalent calculation if you report one, and in corrosion of stainless equipment held wet with concentrated solution.

05

For parenteral and clinical use, arginine hydrochloride rather than the base is the form with a JP Injection monograph — a useful signal of which form the pharmaceutical world has standardised on.

06Regulatory status by market

Regulatory status by market

Status of the raw material, stated as conservatively as our sources allow. This is supply-chain information, not regulatory advice — confirm the position for your finished product and destination market with your own regulatory counsel.

MarketStatusBasis
United StatesListed by name in FDA's food-additive regulation for amino acids as 'L-Arginine'. That regulation permits use as a nutrient 'to significantly improve the biological quality of the total protein' of a food, subject to a cap of 6.6 percent by weight of the total protein of the finished food, and to the labelling requirements in paragraph (e). It is not a general-purpose clearance for any food use, and it is not the authority under which dietary supplements are marketed — those sit under DSHEA and 21 CFR part 111.21 CFR 172.320(a), (b), (c)(4), (e)
European UnionAmino acids are not covered by the harmonised positive lists of Directive 2002/46/EC (Annexes I and II of that Directive cover vitamins and minerals only). Amino acid ingredients are therefore governed by general EU food law plus national rules, with mutual recognition under Article 4 of Regulation (EC) No 764/2008 in practice.Directive 2002/46/EC (food supplements); national member-state rules

09Procurement FAQ

Procurement FAQ

01Base or hydrochloride for a flavoured drink?
Hydrochloride, nearly always. The free base is strongly alkaline and will push your pH up and pick up CO2 from the air; the HCl salt is near-neutral and behaves itself in an open plant. You give up potency: 82.7% arginine versus 100%.
02How much HCl salt equals a 3000 mg arginine claim?
3628 mg, from the 82.7% free-base equivalent. Tell us on the RFQ whether your target is arginine or salt weight — this is where most arginine orders go wrong.
03Do you have a monograph grade?
There are FCC and JP monographs for L-arginine monohydrochloride, and JP additionally has an Injection monograph for it. Tell us which monograph and which edition you need to comply with and we will get the manufacturer to confirm against it in writing before shipment.
04Any issue with chloride in my process?
Two to watch. Chloride shows up in the monograph chloride limit test, and concentrated arginine HCl solution left standing on stainless steel is a corrosion risk. Neither is a problem at normal use levels, but both are worth a line in your process risk assessment.
05What is the MOQ for L-Arginine HCl?
MOQ is quote-based and flexible. Tell us your target quantity in the RFQ — for core in-stock SKUs we can usually accommodate both trial orders and multi-tonne volumes.
06Can I get a sample of L-Arginine HCl before ordering?
Yes — samples are available on request for evaluation and lab verification. Mention it in your RFQ and we will confirm the arrangement.
