Air vs Sea Freight for Bulk Ingredients

The decision is rarely about rate alone. It is about how much inventory you are willing to hold against how much you are willing to pay to shorten the pipeline.

Air freight is priced per kilogram and moves in single-digit days. It earns its cost when you are launching, recovering from a stockout, or qualifying a batch before a full order.

Sea LCL is priced per kilogram at a fraction of air but adds weeks of transit and requires you to plan around sailing schedules. For repeat volume it is almost always the lower landed cost.

A pattern that works well: sea for the base volume on a forecast, air for the top-up when demand runs ahead of plan. Consolidating several SKUs into one shipment out of Shanghai reduces the per-kilogram cost either way.

Whichever mode you choose, the freight estimate is only an estimate until a forwarder quotes your actual lane, volume and dates.
