Minimum order quantity in ingredient trading is rarely a fixed number. It is the point at which a shipment makes economic sense once packing, consolidation and freight are accounted for. A 25 kg bag of a fast-moving grade behaves very differently from a pallet of a slow-moving one.

For core in-stock SKUs a trial order can usually be accommodated alongside a larger consolidated shipment, which is why it is worth telling your supplier the whole picture: the trial quantity now and the volume you expect if qualification passes.

Practical sequence that works: request the specification sheet and a recent batch COA first, then a sample for lab verification, then a trial order sized to one production run, then a standing forecast. Each step reduces the risk of the next.
