USP, FCC and JP Grades Explained

A grade designation is a promise that the material has been tested against a named monograph. It is not a general quality ranking — it tells you which test methods and limits apply.

USP and FCC are the references most often requested for supplement and food applications in North America, while JP appears where Japanese monographs govern. Specifying the wrong one creates rework in QA even when the material itself is suitable.

The practical step is to name the monograph in your purchase specification and confirm the COA reports against it. A material described only as high purity leaves the interpretation to whoever is testing it.

Where your market has no applicable monograph, agree a written specification with the supplier covering assay, identity, physical parameters, heavy metals and microbiology — and hold both parties to it.
