A dash means we have no fixed limit to publish for that parameter: it is reported on the batch COA and the limit is agreed with your QA. We would rather leave it blank than invent a number. 04Formulation & handling notes

Formulation & handling notes

The practical points our technical team raises with buyers of this material — the things that decide whether a batch behaves in your process.

01

The reason salts of carnitine exist at all is moisture: carnitine free base is so hygroscopic that it is impractical as a dry powder, which is why the trade sells the hydrochloride and the L-tartrate. Between the two salts, the HCl is the higher-potency one at 81.6% carnitine (161.20/197.66) versus 68% for the tartrate.

02

The HCl salt makes an acidic solution, so it fits naturally into low-pH beverages and shots but will shift the pH of an unbuffered blend downward — the opposite direction from the tartrate at equal carnitine load.

03

Chloride load matters in two places: a chloride-sensitive analytical method (the chloride limit test in an amino-acid monograph) and stainless-steel process equipment held wet. Both are non-issues with the tartrate.

04

Because it is the highest-potency carnitine salt on this list, it is the one to use when the label needs a high carnitine number in a small capsule — 500 mg carnitine needs about 613 mg of the HCl versus about 735 mg of the tartrate.

05

Any switch between carnitine salt forms must be recalculated on the free-base equivalent, and the counter-ion (chloride versus tartrate) has to be declared correctly in the ingredient statement.

United StatesL-carnitine is not one of the amino acids listed in FDA's amino-acid food-additive regulation (21 CFR 172.320) — that list does not include carnitine in any form. 09Procurement FAQ

Procurement FAQ

01HCl or tartrate — which carnitine salt should I order?
Potency versus pH. The HCl is 81.6% carnitine and gives an acidic solution; the tartrate is 68% carnitine and is the form the trade treats as non-hygroscopic for dry blends. High-potency capsules lean HCl; flavoured powders and stick packs usually lean tartrate.
02How much HCl salt do I need for a 500 mg carnitine claim?
About 613 mg, from the 81.6% free-base equivalent. Always state on your RFQ whether your target is carnitine or salt weight — most disputes on carnitine orders come from that one ambiguity.
03Is D-carnitine controlled in this material?
It should be. Only the L (R) enantiomer is the physiological form, and D-carnitine is the impurity buyers care about. Ask us for the manufacturer's enantiomeric purity limit and the method used, and we will put it in the specification sheet before you order.
04Lead time and quantity for this SKU?
This is a smaller-holding item than the tartrate — around 50 kg on hand with roughly one week to Shanghai for anything larger. If you need tonnage carnitine now, the tartrate is where our depth is.
05What is the MOQ for L-Carnitine HCl?
MOQ is quote-based and flexible. Tell us your target quantity in the RFQ — for core in-stock SKUs we can usually accommodate both trial orders and multi-tonne volumes.
06Can I get a sample of L-Carnitine HCl before ordering?
Yes — samples are available on request for evaluation and lab verification. Mention it in your RFQ and we will confirm the arrangement.
