Why this compound has a literature
Taurine is a beta-amino sulfonic acid rather than a protein-forming amino acid, and its research literature reflects that unusual position. It is studied in three largely separate communities: veterinary and paediatric nutrition, where dietary taurine adequacy has been established as a real physiological requirement in specific species and life stages; sports science, where it has been trialled repeatedly as an acute ergogenic aid; and, since 2023, ageing biology, where a high-profile hypothesis about taurine and ageing has been directly contested by subsequent human data.
What the literature investigates
Species-specific dietary essentiality: the feline case
The clearest demonstration that dietary taurine can be a genuine requirement came from veterinary medicine. A 1987 Science paper reported low plasma taurine concentrations together with echocardiographic evidence of myocardial failure in 21 cats fed commercial cat foods and in 2 of 11 cats fed a purified diet marginally low in taurine for four years, and reported that oral taurine supplementation raised plasma taurine and was associated with normalisation of left ventricular function in both groups. This finding reshaped commercial cat food formulation and is why taurine is a mandatory nutrient in feline diets. It is a species-specific result driven by cats' limited capacity for endogenous taurine synthesis, and it says nothing about taurine intake in species that synthesise it adequately — a distinction that is often lost in downstream marketing but which procurement teams supplying pet-food customers should keep clear.
Conditional essentiality in early life
A parallel line of work in paediatric nutrition examined taurine in preterm and term infants. A review of this literature described taurine as a conditionally essential amino acid in infant nutrition, reporting that plasma and urinary taurine values fall in infants fed taurine-free formula or taurine-free parenteral nutrition, that very-low-birth-weight infants have limited capacity to conserve taurine through renal reabsorption because of tubular transport immaturity, and discussing taurine-conjugated bile acids in relation to fat absorption in preterm infants and in children with cystic fibrosis. This is why taurine appears in infant formula compositional standards in many markets. It is also a literature about adequacy in a defined vulnerable population rather than about supplementation in healthy adults, and it does not transfer to general-population products.
Acute exercise trials: consistent small effects, no clear dose-response
Taurine has been trialled extensively as an acute ergogenic aid, and the meta-analytic picture is unusually consistent in its modesty. A 2018 meta-analysis of ten peer-reviewed studies with doses from 1 to 6 g/day used meta-regression to examine dose and acute-versus-chronic supplementation period. A 2025 three-level meta-analysis of 23 randomised trials (69 effects, N = 308) reported small-to-moderate pooled improvements in overall performance after a single acute dose (g = 0.25, 95% CI 0.10-0.39), reported no significant dose-response across the commonly used 1-6 g range, and found both capsule and beverage formats represented among effective protocols. A 2025 systematic review and network meta-analysis examined caffeine and taurine individually and combined across physical capacity, cognitive function and physiological markers. The absence of a detectable dose-response across a six-fold dose range is itself the most formulation-relevant finding here.
The ageing hypothesis and its direct challenge
In 2023 a paper in Science reported that circulating taurine concentrations declined with age in mice, monkeys and humans, that supplementation increased health span in mice and monkeys and life span in mice and worms, and that lower taurine concentrations correlated with several age-related diseases in humans; the authors explicitly concluded that clinical trials in humans seemed warranted to test the hypothesis. In 2025 an Aging Cell study assessed circulating taurine in 137 physically inactive and physically active men aged 20 to 93 and reported no association between circulating taurine and age, muscle mass, strength, physical performance or mitochondrial function, describing the results as challenging taurine deficiency as a primary driver of ageing in humans. This is an actively contested question, not a settled one, and any procurement or formulation decision framed on the 2023 result should be read alongside the 2025 counter-evidence.
What this means when you specify the material
The exercise literature used 1-6 g as a single acute dose or daily intake, in both capsule and beverage formats, and the pooled analyses did not detect a dose-response within that range — so a higher inclusion rate is not supported by the trial data as a reason to raise cost. A 2008 risk assessment applied the Observed Safe Level method and identified 3 g/day as the level up to which evidence for absence of adverse effects in published human trials was strong; that is an evidence boundary, not a regulatory limit, and destination-market rules govern. Pet-food and infant-nutrition customers are working from a completely different, requirement-based literature, and will ask about compositional consistency rather than dose.
