04Formulation & handling notes

Formulation & handling notes

The practical points our technical team raises with buyers of this material — the things that decide whether a batch behaves in your process.

01

Valine is by a wide margin the most soluble of the three BCAAs — 88.5 g/L in water at 25 °C against isoleucine's 41.2 and leucine's 24.3. In a 2:1:1 blend it is never the ingredient that limits your concentration, which is worth knowing when you are diagnosing a hazy BCAA drink: the problem is leucine first, isoleucine second, and essentially never valine.

02

Its solubility is also the flattest with temperature of the three — 83.4 g/L at 0 °C to 102.4 g/L at 65 °C, only about a 23% swing. That makes valine the most predictable BCAA across a cold chain, whereas isoleucine roughly doubles over the same kind of range.

03

Valine sublimes without melting at ordinary heating rates and decomposes near 298-315 °C in a closed capillary. Sublimation matters for vacuum drying and lyophilisation, where you can lose material to the condenser rather than to degradation.

04

It is insoluble in common neutral solvents and only very slightly soluble in alcohol, so like the other BCAAs it is aqueous and dry-blend only.

05

Valine and leucine share the branched-chain pattern but differ in molecular weight (117.15 versus 131.17), so a 2:1:1 blend by weight is not a 2:1:1 blend by moles. If you are specifying a ratio, state whether it is w/w — the industry convention is by weight, but say so.

06

Reported crystal density is 1.23 g/cm3 at 25 °C. As with the other amino acids in the range, ask for bulk and tapped density separately if you scoop-fill; the crystal figure will overstate what fits in a scoop.

Regulatory status by market

Status of the raw material, stated as conservatively as our sources allow. This is supply-chain information, not regulatory advice — confirm the position for your finished product and destination market with your own regulatory counsel.

MarketStatusBasis
United StatesListed by name in FDA's food-additive regulation for amino acids as 'L-Valine'. That regulation permits use as a nutrient 'to significantly improve the biological quality of the total protein' of a food, subject to a cap of 7.4 percent by weight of the total protein of the finished food, and to the labelling requirements in paragraph (e). It is not a general-purpose clearance for any food use, and it is not the authority under which dietary supplements are marketed — those sit under DSHEA and 21 CFR part 111.21 CFR 172.320(a), (b), (c)(4), (e)
European UnionAmino acids are not covered by the harmonised positive lists of Directive 2002/46/EC (Annexes I and II of that Directive cover vitamins and minerals only). 09Procurement FAQ

Procurement FAQ

01Is valine ever the cause of a cloudy BCAA drink?
Almost never. At 88.5 g/L in water at 25 °C it is over three times more soluble than leucine. If your 2:1:1 blend hazes, look at leucine first and isoleucine second.
02Does a 2:1:1 ratio mean by weight or by moles?
By weight, in industry practice — and it is worth writing 'w/w' on your specification, because the three BCAAs have different molecular weights (leucine and isoleucine 131.17, valine 117.15), so a weight ratio is not a mole ratio.
03We lyophilise our premix. Any concern with valine?
Yes — valine sublimes without melting at ordinary heating rates. Under vacuum you can lose active to the condenser. If your mass balance is off after drying, check there before assuming degradation.
04Stock and lead time?
This is a small ready-stock item (about 50 kg). Larger volumes are procured to order, typically about one week to Shanghai — worth consolidating with leucine and isoleucine so the whole BCAA set ships together.
05What is the MOQ for L-Valine?
MOQ is quote-based and flexible. Tell us your target quantity in the RFQ — for core in-stock SKUs we can usually accommodate both trial orders and multi-tonne volumes.
06Can I get a sample of L-Valine before ordering?
Yes — samples are available on request for evaluation and lab verification. Mention it in your RFQ and we will confirm the arrangement.
