Glucosamine: two certificates reading 99.5% that differ by 40% in glucosamine
The USP monograph gives you every number needed to prove that the two salts are not interchangeable — and then reports the assay in the units that hide it.

Glucosamine hydrochloride is 83.09% glucosamine by mass; glucosamine sulfate potassium chloride is 59.18%. That is a factor of 1.404, and both materials can carry a certificate reading 99.5%, because each USP monograph assays the salt rather than the glucosamine. Every number needed to prove this is printed in the monographs themselves. A buyer comparing prices per kilogram of powder, rather than per kilogram of glucosamine, will systematically overpay for the sulfate form by about 40%.

The arithmetic, taken entirely from the pharmacopoeia
The USP monograph for Glucosamine Sulfate Potassium Chloride opens with the formula (C6H14NO5)2SO4·2KCl and the molecular weight 605.52, CAS 38899-05-7. Two glucosammonium cations, one sulfate, two potassium chlorides. The Tablets monograph, in its calculation, states the two other numbers you need outright: glucosamine Mr 179.17 and glucosamine hydrochloride Mr 215.63.
From there it is division. Glucosamine hydrochloride: 179.17 ÷ 215.63 = 0.8309, so 83.09% of the powder is glucosamine. Glucosamine sulfate potassium chloride: two glucosamine units at 179.17 is 358.34, divided by 605.52 gives 0.5918 — 59.18%. The ratio between the two is 1.404.
Put a dose behind it. A 1,500 mg serving of glucosamine hydrochloride carries 1,246 mg of glucosamine. A 1,500 mg serving of glucosamine sulfate potassium chloride carries 888 mg. The labels can both say 1,500 mg and both be accurate, because they are declaring the salt.
The sodium-stabilised variant behaves differently again: (C6H14NO5)2SO4·2NaCl has a molecular weight of 573.30, giving a glucosamine fraction of 62.51%. Three named materials, three different factors, one word on the purchase order.
Why the certificate does not warn you
The USP definition for the sulfate complex is explicit about what it is measuring: "Glucosamine Sulfate Potassium Chloride contains NLT 98.0% and NMT 102.0% of glucosamine sulfate potassium chloride [(C6H14NO5)2SO4·2KCl], calculated on the dried basis." The unit of the assay is the complex. A result of 99.5% means the powder is 99.5% of that whole assembly — potassium, chloride, sulfate and all.
The glucosamine hydrochloride monograph does the same thing for its own salt. So two certificates, from two honest laboratories, both reading 99.5%, describe materials whose glucosamine content differs by 40%. Nothing on either page is wrong. The comparison is what is wrong.
There is a further wrinkle worth knowing: the USP assay for the sulfate complex is run against USP Glucosamine Hydrochloride RS — the reference standard for the other salt — with the chromatography measuring the glucosamine peak. So the laboratory is in fact measuring glucosamine and then converting back up to the complex for reporting. The number you actually want passes through the calculation and is discarded before it reaches the certificate.
What else is in the drum
In the sulfate 2KCl complex, potassium chloride is not an impurity — it is a defined part of the compound, present because glucosamine sulfate on its own is hygroscopic and unstable, and the salt is what makes it a handleable solid. But it still occupies mass and it still has to be declared.
By formula weight, the two potassium atoms are 2 × 39.10 = 78.20 out of 605.52, which is 12.92% potassium. The two chlorides are 2 × 35.45 = 70.90, or 11.71% chloride. On a 1,500 mg dose that is 194 mg of potassium and 176 mg of chloride arriving with the glucosamine. For most formulations this is simply a fact to record; for anything with a potassium or sodium declaration on the nutrition panel, it is a number that has to appear.
The sulfate itself is 96.06 of 605.52, or 15.87%. Add the three: 12.92 + 11.71 + 15.87 = 40.5%, which is the complement of the 59.18% glucosamine, as it must be. If those numbers do not close, something is wrong with the material rather than with the arithmetic — which is the useful property of doing it this way.
How to specify and how to price
Put the glucosamine content on the specification as its own line: "Glucosamine (calculated as C6H13NO5, Mr 179.17): ≥ 58.0%" for the sulfate 2KCl, or "≥ 82.0%" for the hydrochloride. Keep the salt assay too — it is the compendial requirement — but do not let it be the only number, because it is the one that cannot be compared across salts.
Price per kilogram of glucosamine, not per kilogram of powder. Divide every quotation by the glucosamine fraction of the salt being quoted and the ranking often inverts, because the sulfate complex is customarily quoted at a lower headline price per kilogram and delivers 40% less of the compound.
Name the salt in full on the purchase order and the label: "glucosamine sulfate potassium chloride" and "glucosamine sulfate sodium chloride" are different articles, and "glucosamine sulfate" without a stabiliser named is not a commercially available solid at all. Where a formulation was designed around one salt, substituting the other at equal mass changes the glucosamine delivered by 40% — which is a formulation change, not a sourcing change.
