Tyrosine's defining formulation constraint is that it is essentially insoluble in water — 0.479 g/L at 25 °C, which is about 200 times less soluble than glutamine and 2,000 times less soluble than lysine. A 500 mg dose needs more than a litre of water at neutral pH. This single number rules tyrosine out of clear ready-to-drink beverages at any meaningful dose, and it is the reason tyrosine appears in capsules and powders rather than in shots.

The way around it is pH, not co-solvent. Tyrosine is soluble in alkaline solutions and in dilute mineral acid but insoluble in absolute alcohol, ether and acetone. Moving well away from the isoelectric point of 5.66 is the only lever that works — which is exactly why N-acetyl-L-tyrosine and tyrosine salts exist as premium alternatives.

In a suspension or a 'shake and drink' powder, tyrosine is the ingredient that will settle out and cake in the bottom of the bottle. If your product is a powder-in-water format, tell your customers to drink it promptly, or reformulate.

It has three ionisable groups — pK values of 2.20 (carboxyl), 9.11 (amine) and 10.07 (phenol) — the phenol being unique to tyrosine among the products here. That phenolic hydroxyl is also an oxidation and discolouration site, so a tyrosine-containing wet system can pink or brown over shelf life.

It is the most thermally stable item in the range, decomposing at about 343 °C, so bar extrusion and hot processing are not a constraint — solubility is.

Tyrosine and phenylalanine differ by one hydroxyl and both absorb in the UV. If your assay is a UV method on a multi-ingredient blend, they will interfere with each other; ask for a chromatographic assay.

Because the free amino acid is so insoluble, crystal habit matters more than usual: it crystallises as fine silky needles, which flow and pack very differently from a granular powder. Get bulk and tapped density before you fix a capsule or scoop size.

01Can I put L-tyrosine in a ready-to-drink beverage?
Realistically, no — not at a functional dose. Free L-tyrosine dissolves at only 0.479 g/L in water at 25 °C, so a 500 mg serving needs more than a litre. Tyrosine belongs in capsules, tablets and dry powders. If you need a liquid format, look at more soluble derivatives and salts.
02Will raising or lowering the pH help?
It is the only thing that will. Tyrosine is soluble in alkaline solutions and in dilute mineral acid and insoluble in alcohol, ether and acetone — so moving well away from its isoelectric point of 5.66 is the lever. Co-solvents do not work.
03My tyrosine powder blend settles out in water. Is the material at fault?
No — that is tyrosine behaving normally. It is by far the least soluble item in our range. For a shake-and-drink format, either accept a suspension and label it as such, or reformulate.
04Why does my tyrosine-containing liquid discolour?
The phenolic hydroxyl group, which is unique to tyrosine among the amino acids we supply, is an oxidation site. Pink or brown drift over shelf life in a wet system is the usual symptom. Consider oxygen headspace, chelation of trace metals and antioxidant strategy.
